A notice is not an application. It has a heading, a date, a reference number, and no &quot;Sir,&quot; no &quot;we pray and hope,&quot; and no obedient closing. If you write a beautiful application in answer to a notice question, the content will not save you.<\/p>\n<p>The first row is the question this page answers, and it is the one most often set.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_This_One_Is_a_%22We%22_Application\"><\/span>Why This One Is a &quot;We&quot; Application<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A sports day is for the whole school, so the request is collective. Open with &quot;We, the students of your school,&quot; hold that voice through the body, and close with &quot;Your obedient students.&quot; The moment you write &quot;I would like to take part in the sports,&quot; you have answered a different question.<\/p>\n<p>This is the same collective-request rule used in the <a href=\"\/hi\/application-for-a-common-room\/\">common room application<\/a> and the <a href=\"\/hi\/application-for-a-school-canteen\/\">school canteen application<\/a>. What makes the sports day version slightly different is that you are asking for an <strong>event<\/strong> rather than a facility. An event costs the school time rather than construction, which is why the model above spends a sentence on timing: it shows you have thought about the cost of what you are asking for. Do not. You cannot cite a source in an exam script, and an invented figure is worth nothing to a marker.<\/p>\n<p>Three reasons carry this application on their own, and all three are true by observation rather than by statistic:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Recognition.<\/strong> A sports day is the one occasion on which a student who is strong at athletics rather than at examinations is recognized publicly. Nothing else in the school calendar does this.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Balance.<\/strong> Most of the school day is spent sitting. An organized competition gives students something physical to train for, which informal games after class do not.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The school as a whole.<\/strong> It is one of the few days when every class, and often guardians too, are in the same place for the same reason.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Notice that each of these is a complete thought, not an adjective. &quot;Sports are very good for health and mind&quot; is not a reason, it is a slogan, and it is the sentence half the scripts in the room will contain.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Detail_Most_Students_Leave_Out\"><\/span>The Detail Most Students Leave Out<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Read the third paragraph of the model again. It suggests a time: not during preparation for the annual examination, and in the cooler part of the year if possible.<\/p>\n<p>That paragraph does something the rest of the application cannot. It shows the writer has considered the school&#39;s side of the request, not only the students&#39; side. A request that anticipates the obvious objection (&quot;this will disrupt classes&quot;) is far more persuasive than one that pretends the objection does not exist.<\/p>\n<p>Note carefully what it does <strong>not<\/strong> do. It does not name a date, a month, or a week. Do not write &quot;we request that the sports day be held on the fourteenth of next month,&quot; because the date is not yours to choose and you would be inventing it. Suggest a condition, not a date.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Common_Mistakes_in_This_Application\"><\/span>Common Mistakes in This Application<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Answering the wrong question.<\/strong> Covered above, and it is the most expensive mistake here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Breaking into &quot;I&quot; voice.<\/strong> &quot;We, the students&quot; in the first line and &quot;I am very good at the high jump&quot; in the third paragraph is a voice break an examiner sees instantly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Listing events.<\/strong> A long list of races and games fills space and adds nothing. One clause is enough: the events need not be elaborate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inventing a budget or a sponsor.<\/strong> No cost figure and no named donor belongs in a student application.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Promising prizes.<\/strong> Prizes are the school&#39;s decision, not the applicants&#39;.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Adapt_This_to_Any_Other_School_Event\"><\/span>How to Adapt This to Any Other School Event<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Annual prize giving, a study tour, a cultural function, a debating competition, a science fair: the exam sets all of them, and they share this structure exactly. Name the event that is not being held, say plainly what students do instead at present, give two or three reasons that stand without numbers, offer the students&#39; help with organizing, add one sentence showing you have thought about the timing, and close in the collective voice.<\/p>\n<p>The nearest sibling in this cluster is the <a href=\"\/hi\/application-for-a-study-tour\/\">study tour application<\/a>, which is also a request for an event rather than a facility, with one extra complication: a study tour involves travel and cost, so it has to be handled slightly differently.
